-Enid and Wednesday about Thing[src]"Enid: Where's the rest of him?
Wednesday: It's one of the great Addams family mysteries."
Thing is a disembodied hand. He serves as Wednesday's right hand, naturally, and is considered part of the Addams Family.
He is portrayed by Victor Dorobantu and appears in seasons one and two of the 2022 Netflix TV series Wednesday. Owen Painter portrays Thing in "Chapter VIII: A Murder of Woes".
Biography[]
Background[]
Thing was created from the energy explosion in Iago Tower in the 1990s. The explosion occurred when Morticia severed Isaac Night's right hand while he operated a dangerous machine. Isaac was killed in the explosion, but his right hand was disembodied and came to life. Gomez believes that whatever good was left in Isaac somehow culminated in Thing.
Thing was taken in by Morticia and Gomez, where he became their most loyal helpmate, taking care of some of their errands, and looking out for their children. He even partnered with Fester on his crazy adventures and missions on occasion, although the last one didn't turn out so well for either of them. Morticia and Gomez concealed Thing's origin, making him one of the Addams family's greatest mysteries.
Season One[]
Thing is first seen when Morticia and Gomez deploy Thing to spy on their daughter Wednesday, who is enrolling in Nevermore Academy. Thing drops out of the bottom of the Addams family car.
In fencing class, Thing is seen hiding behind furniture, keeping close to Wednesday without her seeing him. He spies on her when she goes to the infirmary.
Back in her dorm, Wednesday works on her novel until she hears Thing rustling in her covers. She finds him, and as he tries to escape, she grabs him. Wednesday knew he was following her, as she could smell his hand lotion. She detains holds Thing until he surrenders, giving him the option of being locked in a drawer for the rest of the semester, or pledging his loyalty to her. He chooses loyalty.
Thing is briefly seen in Wednesday's backpack. He hands her a nail file, and she uses it to open the window in the powder room and escape onto the roof.
While Wednesday plays her cello, Thing turns her sheet music. After she is done, he asks her if she feels better, but she does not. Enid comes out onto the balcony, and when she sees Thing, she asks where the rest of him is. He drops from the music stand and goes back into the dorm.
Wednesday writes Enid's number on Thing and sends him to Tyler's house. Once at Tyler's house, Thing knocks on his window. Once the window is open, Thing enters Tyler's room, narrowly missing being hit with a baseball bat. After Tyler failed to hit him several times, Thing took the bat from him and threw it to the side. He then commands Tyler to sit down and call Wednesday. At being called a pet, Thing flips the middle finger up at Tyler.

Thing is forced to tell Morticia about Wednesday's misuse of Goody's spellbook over the summer, sparking another battle between the Addams women. Thing then accompanies Wednesday when she breaks into Galpin's house, shielding himself from the murder of ravens that attack. Once back at Nevermore, Wednesday swears Thing to secrecy about Enid's impending doom and tasks him with both protecting Enid and reading Goody's book to find answers. His loyalty is tested when Morticia arrives demanding the book. Thing vents over how the Addams family has mistreated him over the years, earning a much-needed admittance of shortcomings from Morticia. He storms into his chest, where he remains until Enid finds him, having intercepted a birthday gift to him from Uncle Fester. She realizes the entire Addams family forgot his birthday and vows to celebrate with the rest of "their" pack, but is kidnapped before the celebrations. Wednesday and Thing try to rescue Bruno and Enid, though Thing is temporarily incapacitated by Agnes. Once the situation is resolved, Wednesday apologizes to Thing for missing his birthday and gifts him an antique thumbscrew, offering herself as his first victim. Thing worries for Enid's safety and future since Wednesday's vision. She soon uncovers that Morticia took the book.
Gomez makes up for forgetting Thing's birthday by gifting him a massage from a famous masseuse. After the gift, Thing and Wednesday discuss her vision, with him wanting to tell Enid the truth. She refuses because Enid isn't strong enough to handle it. The duo attends Camp Outcast with the rest of Nevermore because of its proximity to Galpin's cabin, which Wednesday believes holds answers to his murder. The camp is interrupted by Phoenix Cadets who were double-booked for the weekend. Wednesday suggests a color war with the losers vacating the camp. Thing helps the outcasts win by being the air signaler for the teams. He accompanies Wednesday to the cabin and then serves as a witness for Morticia and Wednesday's el duelo-a-ciegas.
Thing hangs out in the quad with Enid and the pack. He follows Wednesday's instructions to get a message to Fester in Willow Hill. He is nearly kidnapped by a bird controlled by the avian stalking Wednesday, but luckily, Dort and Enid save him. He then sneaks into Willow Hill to deliver the message to Fester. He witnesses Fester being outed as an Addams and apprehended by Fairburn. Thing rushes back to Wednesday and they concoct a plan to rescue him. During the mayhem of the zombie Slurp's escape and Fester's blackout, Thing is spotted by Slurp. They share a moment that ends when Slurp is distracted. Wednesday faces a transformed Tyler once again and is thrown from a third story window. Thing rushes outside to check on Wednesday, who is bloodied and unconscious.

Thing witnesses Wednesday and Enid's realization they have switched bodies. He later supports Enid the best he can when she's invited to attend an Addams family dinner. He can't go with her because he's going to a support group for appendages. She sympathizes with him now that she's been dislodged from her body, too. She needs intel on the family before dinner and finds Wednesday's novel, ignoring Thing's warnings against reading it. He witnesses her anger over its contents.
He attends the meeting as the newest member, with Professor Orloff leading the group. Thing shares his story and how he doesn't know where he came from. He was found by the Addams family with the only key to his past being a signet ring. Orloff advises them not to see themselves as an appendage, but a whole person, worthy of love and respect.
Wednesday investigates the Galpin household and, with help from Thing, locates their secret underground bunker where Isaac, Tyler, and Francoise have been hiding. Thing takes a backseat in her latest detective works. He attends the Venetian masquerade and dances along to Enid's performance.
It's revealed that Thing was a product of a failed murder on Gomez by Isaac Night, and Morticia severed his right hand. An electrical storm generated by Gomez’s power then animates it.
Description[]
Thing is a disembodied right hand covered in Frankenstein-like stiches. The tips of his fingers are heavily bruised. Enid gives Thing hand cream for the first time to soften his calloused hands, and he has since used a variety of lotions. He is conscious of his nail care and often gets a manicure. During a celebration, Thing will wear a hat or some kind of decoration on the stump of his wrist.
Personality[]
Thing bonds with people he finds to be loyal, aside from members of the Addams family members, as he did with Enid Sinclair. On the other hand, he may be snarky and rude, giving obscene gestures to people who insult him, as seen when Tyler Galpin called him Wednesday's pet. During the course of the show, Thing is also very polite at following orders from companions for certain tasks, but when mistreated, he gets desperate, such as when Wednesday tells him to follow Weems, who used her shapeshifting to impersonate Rowan Laslow, but lost the trail, which disappoints Wednesday, and he provides his service to Enid, to whom he opens up his feelings towards being mad at Addams for not treating him as a person. Afterwards, he reads a magazine on Enid's bed, where Wednesday tries to apologize, but instead he ignores her and shows emotional blackmail until she explains herself, which works as she tells him there's a prophecy of her being responsible for dooming Nevermore, which she has to prevent, and Thing pats his hand on hers, showing deep care in standing by her side to help.
Then at the Poe Cup, he aids in helping the Black Cats by triggering the defensive on their boat and following orders from Enid to distract other competitors. When Kent almost tips the boat over, he swims underneath to punch Kent in the face, leading them to victory.
Thing has a heartfelt effort in caring for the two young girls, as when Enid suggested that Wednesday shouldn't wear the dress she first wore in arriving at Nevermore, she should buy a new one for the Rave'N, and he agrees with a thumbs up. When Wednesday runs into Tyler, he gets desperate when hearing she was going to the dance with Xavier, and Thing briefly emerges out of her bag, attempting to engage in a conversation with her only to be told not to, so he instead writes a note as an invitation for Tyler to find in the tip jar from Wednesday, who later that night realized he wrote it in genuine and sweet language for Wednesday to accept going with him, and the disembodied hand also bought a black dress for her to wear.
Thing's caretaking skills for both Wednesday and Enid are very parental-like as he plays a good matchmaker (i.e., when going on a field trip, Enid was hoping to get an assessment with Ajax, so he took a peek into his task, which Wednesday informed her to successfully ask him on a date. On the other hand, when Tyler asked Wednesday on a date to Crackstone's crib, he waved goodbye to her knowing she was in denial about liking him).
Thing is also shown to be quite vain about his skin; Wednesday mentions he uses a hand lotion of neroli and bergamot and blackmails him by threatening to lock him in the drawer of her furniture for the rest of the semester, which would ruin his nails and his skin. Another example of his vanity is that he does manis and nails with Enid. He is also a bit prideful when it comes to his capacities, refusing to accept it was his fault that the job with Fester went wrong, and after opening a safe box, he bowed, bragging about it.
He can be a bit perverted most times, as when Wednesday was about to change into the new dress, he leans forward on the rail of her bed only to turn another direction once she tells him not to watch, which he does after taking a short peep but completely looks away, and after Enid's first "wolfing out," she transforms back to human form, totally nude and covered with the blood of her injuries, to hold her hand in comfort, more concerned about supporting her being in pain, which shows gentlemanly behavior towards female privacy and dignity.
Even doing the same for their friends, as when Wednesday asked for him to watch over Eugene after he was hospitalized, he did exactly that, and when Xavier was in handcuffs, he released him.
Thing also happens to hold a grudge over certain situations, like when Fester visits, he angrily grumps towards the latter for a previous job that went wrong, which he claims wasn't his fault, only to have the disembodied hand lunge and strangle his throat until Wednesday orders him to stop.

Relationships[]
Gomez Addams[]

Gomez found Thing in the immediate aftermath of Thing's new bodiless existence. Gomez saw the good in Thing and realized the appendage had no recollection of his host or history, so he brought Thing into his family and named him. They became best friends and comrades, often getting into mischief together. Thing became an integral part of the Addams family and was the only person Gomez trusted to look after Wednesday at Nevermore - and the only one Wednesday wouldn't wound for the attempt. Despite their closeness, Gomez takes advantage of Thing and his services, often treating him more as a servant than a friend. When Gomez realized that he had forgotten Thing's birthday, he immediately rectified the situation by hiring Stassa to give Thing a massage.
Wednesday Addams[]
-Wednesday to Thing[src]"Who did this to you? Knife from behind the back. Cowards. I promise that whoever did this to you will suffer. And it will be slow, long, and excruciatingly painful."

Wednesday treats him like a member of her family. She also shows that she has a close relationship with him. Thing acts as her loyal sidekick and assistant in her investigation to find out who is responsible for all the crimes. Right when she realizes Thing suffered an attack and was mortally wounded, she storms out to Fester and pleads with him to save her friend, and after getting safe, she cries a little, relieved that she hasn't lost Thing, and she promises him that she will get revenge and will make the responsible party pay for what he did to Thing.
Enid Sinclair[]

During the course of the show, Enid and Thing become close friends and are seen and mentioned doing nails for each other, doing makeup tutorials, and communicating with each other very often; she can even understand his sign language. At the end of the season, she makes him promise to keep in touch. When he goes to inform her of Wednesday being kidnapped by Laurel Gates and Tyler, Enid takes Thing with her into the woods until the blood moon begins to transform her into her full wolf form, which frightens him a bit before he goes off to free Xavier. Then later, after defeating Tyler, Thing crawls in the woods and goes over to hold Enid's hand in comfort, as her first time turning back to human caused her muscles to ache painfully before off-screen she could find and cover up with her coat to slowly walk back to the school alone.
Xavier Thorpe[]

They do not have much of a relationship, but Thing might remember the Addams family going to his godmother's funeral, so he helps free him out of the police car to help Wednesday fight the resurrected Crackstone at Nevermore Academy.
Fester Addams[]
-Fester to Thing[src]"I'd recognize the patter of those fingertips anywhere. Hello, Thing!"
Fester and Thing have a complicated relationship. They were once the best of friends and co-conspirators in crimes, until a job in Kalamazoo when Thing failed to crack a safe in thirty seconds. The duo still disagrees about how the job went down. Thing attacked Fester upon seeing him since the incident. However, the bad blood became water under the bridge, as Fester resuscitated Thing when he was stabbed, and Thing helped Fester escape Willow Hill. Fester was the first in the family to remember his birthday.
