Raul Rafael Carlos Julia y Arcelay, known professionally as Raul Julia (9 March 1940 - 24 October 1994) was an American actor.
Born in Puerto Rico, he moved to New York City in 1964 at the urging of Orson Bean, and almost immediately began getting small roles in Broadway productions. Julia was nominated for four Tony Awards for best actor but never won.
A strong Shakespearean performer, Julia won acclaim in 1982's Tempest. In 1985 he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actor for his work in Kiss of the Spider Woman. His last theatrical film was Street Fighter: The Movie, which is dedicated to his memory.
He was married to Magda Vasallo from 1965 to 1969, and to Merel Poloway from 1976 to his death in 1994.
Julia is probably best-known for taking over the role of Gomez Addams in the film, The Addams Family, and its sequel, Addams Family Values. A third installment was planned but scrapped when Julia suddenly died of complications from a stroke at the young age of 54.
