Embarrassed by his parents' weekly underwear speeches at school and afraid to admit that he does not want to take over his father's business one day, N.J. Normanmeyer runs away from home. Wednesday and Pugsley allow him to stay in a spare room after he says the Addams residence is the one place where he can be himself. They disguise him and introduce him as Mumbles Addams, a long lost cousin, at a family reunion organized by Gomez and Morticia. N.J. initially likes the attention he receives, but soon finds the relatives too odd for his taste when they fight over whose side of the family Mumbles is from. When he upsets Uncle Fracas by refusing to sit next to him and his mother, Fracas starts chasing him with a cousin-smacker. After Wednesday and Pugsley save N.J., Wednesday tells him it is alright to be different or not live up to people's expectations. N.J. gains the courage to return home, and his parents, who were worried about his disappearance, announce that they will be less critical of him in the future.
